A comparative study of lipid-based drug delivery systems with different microstructure for combined dermal administration of antioxidant vitamins

Antioxidant vitamins have been proven to be highly efficient in treatment of skin impaired by oxidative stress, but challenges regarding stability and penetration limit their therapeutic effect. Lipid-based drug delivery systems offer great potential for overcoming these drawbacks. This work aimed identify the most promising system combined antioxidant therapy. A comparative assessment several systems, containing same ingredients differing microstructure, was therefore performed. Namely, microemulsions (MEs) both types (W/O O/W) lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs), simultaneously loaded with vitamin C or ascorbyl palmitate E, were assessed. Stability, capacity (DPPH assay), release (Franz diffusion cells) incorporated examined. The results obtained supported systems’ thermal rheological (rotational oscillatory tests) evaluation. In addition, biological acceptability (MTS assay) studied investigated. findings demonstrate that microstructure MEs LLCs has a decisive impact on stability, activity, incorporated. highest preserved pairings, E being more stable combination. also provided suitable vitamins’ activity characteristics. exhibited preferable features dermal administration. Furthermore, cytotoxicity studies keratinocyte cell line demonstrated biocompatibility LCCs proliferation greater than 85%. conclusion, confirmed as favorable lipid-based treatment.
